Is your mind too busy?

The Busy Mind: The Hidden Cause of Burnout

Over the years, as a mentor and mindfulness coach, I've worked with many clients—both in groups and one-on-one. One common thread that runs through most of them? A busy mind.

It’s no coincidence. Often, our physical busyness mirrors the chaos inside our heads. I know this firsthand. When I worked in the corporate world, I filled my days with endless tasks, thinking I had to be everything to everyone. I believed my life had to stay full, busy, and ‘important’—until burnout struck for the first time in 2009 (yep it can happen more than once!). That year became my annus horribilis—the year I truly understood the toll a busy mind can take.

The busy mind tells you that rest isn’t necessary. It convinces you to keep pushing, keep doing, keep striving. It ignores your body’s signals until chaos takes over. The mind thrives on a constant rush, believing that slowing down equals failure. But here's the truth: the mind can't keep going forever.

If you neglect your mind, just like your body, it will eventually fail you. So often, we fill our minds with negative thoughts, fear, and imagined failures—creating stories that don’t exist. This only leads to worry, stress, and more burnout.

Think about it: What would happen if you pushed your body to run a marathon every day without rest or nourishment? That's what we do to our minds. Mindfulness helps to stop this cycle. It teaches us to slow down, to be present in the here and now, and to let go of what we cannot change.

Give yourself the gift of mindfulness. Take a moment, breathe, and be in the present. Your mind—and body—will thank you for it.
